Aims

  • JCU ePrints is designed to improve access to, and enhance transfer of, the research information contained in theses.

  • Provide online access to full text versions of theses.

  • JCU ePrints is designed to provide a new model for deposit and archiving of theses taking into account the tools and technologies that students are now using to prepare their theses.

How it Works

  • JCU ePrints is a distributed database of digital theses by postgraduate research students at JCU.

  • Theses deposited in this way are still considered to be ‘unpublished documents’ and receive the same high level of protection under the Copyright Act as print theses.

  • Candidates can still place embargoes and other restrictions on access to their work at the discretion/approval of the Dean of Postgraduate Studies. See Policy on Exemptions from digital thesis deposit.

  • The Australian Research Council (ARC) funded the initial Australian project in 1997/1998, on the initiative of seven Australian universities in association with the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL).

JCU Thesis Requirements

By decision of the university’s Academic Board in 2002, theses for doctoral and masters by research degrees must be deposited in digital as well as print format. The library requires one (1) unbound print copy as well as a digital copy on CD-ROM. The digital copy must be in PDF format, with one file per chapter. The standard program to use for creating PDF documents is Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Distiller. If you do not have access to either of these programs, please contact Information Resources staff in the JCU Townsville Library Building for assistance.

The print version will remain the official permanent copy of the thesis. For more information see Submission of Thesis on the Graduate Research School webpages.

  • STATEMENT OF ACCESS: Each thesis must include a signed statement of access.
  • ELECTRONIC COPY DECLARATION: It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that the electronic and print copies have the same content at the time of deposit. Candidates must sign a declaration to that effect and include it with the thesis.

  • RECEIPT OF THESIS: On deposit of a thesis with Information Resources (Townsville Library Building) a letter of receipt will be prepared and sent to the Graduate Research School.

  • Exemption from depositing a thesis in digital form can be sought by writing to the Dean, Postgraduate Studies through the Graduate Research School. Some circumstances may make it more likely that such exemption will be granted. See Policy on Exemptions from Digital Thesis Deposit. Students granted exemption from depositing the whole of their thesis in digital format are required to prepare an extended abstract of 1,000 – 2,000 words for inclusion in the Library thesis database
