Abstract
Much of the identity of North Queensland is built around the mining, agriculture and tourism sectors. The growing, milling and distribution of sugar in particular still plays a central role in the economic and cultural life of North Queensland. Sweet Crush recasts the found sounds and images of the sugar industry into a rhythmic assemblage that, rather than describe the activities of a sugar mill, gives an audio-visual encapsulation of that experience.
Research Statement
| Research Background: | Interdisciplinary works in the creative arts have embraced a range of new possibilities since the advent of digital tools. Creators can now more seamlessly align, intersect, integrate and assemble ideas that breach traditional discipline delineated boundaries. This research seeks to create an original work of relevance to regional stakeholders and to act as a model of interdisciplinary activity to undergraduate students in the creative arts. |

| Research Contribution: | Sweet Crush represents an alignment with the People, Identity and Place research focus of James Cook University in North Queensland. | Research Significance: | This research has brought a new perspective to the daily activities of a sugar mill. Those who work at the mill and those in the community in which it is embedded have experienced a re-contextualisation of these every day activities. Those beyond the region have experienced an insight into these activities as the work has toured as part of the Queensland Festival of Photography. |
