Abstract

Searching through the back issues of Historic Environment (HE), I re-read with interest the volume ‘Managing a Shared Heritage’. This volume comprised selected papers from the 1995 Australia ICOMOS Conference held in Darwin. The title caught my eye as the term ‘shared heritage’ and it's variations have been widely used and critiqued in recent years (see for example Harrison 2004; Murray 2004). It was interesting therefore to revisit what the term as it was understood in 1995.

The conference covered 4 main themes: Finding a Balance; Remote and Ephemeral Sites; Heritage and Cultural Diversity; and Education and Awareness. The HE volume of course included only a selection of the conference papers offered and these ranged geographically across Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia.
