Wear and corrosion are the two common material degradation processes that cost industry a great deal every year. These two destructive processes may act separately or together to bring about the premature failure of equipment and machine which can be detrimental both in safety and monetary terms. It is important to industry that a quantitative method to be developed to assess and quantify the damage caused by abrasive wear alone and when abrasion and corrosion act in a synergistic manner to accelerate the rate of material loss. This development presented in the paper will provide maintenance personnel with a quantitative method to assess the two wear modes and to estimate the wear rate of the wear modes. In the future, the method can be utilized and further developed to predict remaining life time of machines.
