Superfamily Gorgoderoidea Looss, 1899

Abstract

[Extract] There are no outstanding morphological autapomorphies for this superfamily. As can be seen from the diagnosis below, many characters vary greatly between the families and some within families. Thus, it is not possible to summarize the morphology of the group in a short, succinct fashion. Similarly, the hosts and sites of infection vary greatly within the group, gorgoderoids being found in virtually all vertebrate groups from elasmobranchs to mammals. More detailed studies will tell whether the superfamily will survive in anything like its current form.
