According to Australian and international literature, alarming levels of bullying and violence exist in many industrial sectors (including emergency services, child protection services, health services, mental health services, and social and community services), and tertiary students who are undertaking compulsory field placement in such sectors are exposed to this behaviour. The present article describes a small Queensland study which explored the impact of bullying, harassment and workplace violence on students from a regional university while on their field placement. A survey questionnaire was given to fourth-year social work and occupational therapy students who had undertaken one substantial field placement. The findings suggest that approximately 20% of respondents experienced bullying and harassment while on placement, and these experiences had a negative impact on their learning. Recommendations include proactively sensitising students to the broad range of abusive situations that they may face while on placement through a greater use of targeted educational resources and instruction.
