Abstract
The Artists' Studio has been a focus for Queensland printmaker Ron McBurnie for a decade, from the first casual documentation of his former art school lecturer David Paulson at work in his studio, to an all consuming collaboration with some of Australia's prominent artists.
For McBurnie this project has provided the rare experience of working with artists in their studio environment - often inaccessible and private spaces, observing and documenting the daily processes of making art and capturing each artist momentarily, at a particular time in his or her working life.
Research Statement
| Research Background: | The research was undertaken for a ten year period from 1993 and 2003. The project was collaborative in nature and involved visual research into the different studio environments (work spaces) in which a selected number of well known Australian artists produced their creative output. In each studio the researcher produced an etching drawn from life of the artist at work. Each artist responded by including their own images on the researchers etching plate. |

| Research Contribution: | The exhibition preceded several recent photographic examinations of artists in their studios but because of the collaborative nature of the project and the extended period spent examining each studio; the resulting etchings reveal more of the personality and working process of each artist. The resulting etchings unlike photographs are more of a creative response and interpretation of each artist’s creative process in their working environment. |
| Research Significance: | The resulting national touring exhibition from the artist studio research provided the art going public with a unique insight into the often private creative process of the artist. The show included the studio etchings as well as an original work by each of the selected artists. A large published catalogue including images of each etching and an essay by Hendrik Kollenberg accompanied the exhibition. |
