Abstract
From an Island South marks the first partnership between Devonport Regional Gallery and Asialink and is the only exhibition dedicated to Tasmania and its landscape that has been toured by Asialink in its 16 year history.
Research Statement
| Research Background: | In 2006 I was invited by Curator Jane Stewart of Devonport Regional Gallery to submit art work/s for a proposed international touring exhibition: An Island South, that would focus on some of the themes relevant to my research work including: islands, diaspora/displacement, colonialism, southern ocean, history. The exhibition was funded by Asialink, Devonort Regional Gallery and Arts Tasmania. I provided two works: Return, 2006 and a new work, Lure, 2007 for the exhibition. |

| Research Contribution: | The key contribution of this research was that it reached a diverse national and international audiences over a period of 18 months. The exhibition showcased Tasmania visual arts to a broad south east Asian audience, enabling new contacts to be made between institutions and artists involved. |
| Research Significance: | Both artworks: Lure and Return exhibited in “An island south” tested my own and the viewer’s capacity to link disparate objects: shells, hair, lifebuoys, to the desire to find familial pre-colonial memories. These works and their presence travelling for such a long exhibition schedule encouraged my further research in this field of post colonialism and diaspora, which led to the award of an Australia Council, Visual Arts Board two year Fellowship in December 2006, which was based on notions of Home and Diaspora.
