Abstract

The exhibition and catalogue 'Exchange' presented information and art leading up to and during a studio residency in Beijing, China. The early work 'Survivor trees' included imagery from nw Queensland with Mandarin characters to identify place and trees. The catalogue is bi-lingual and contains text by Qi Zhe Long international artist based in Beijing.

Research Statement

Research Background:Environment and landscape are predominant genre for visual artists and the sharing of common landscape elements in drought stricken areas faces Chinese and Australian populations. The work for Exchange was carried out in remote northwest Queensland and developed into a series of drawings and lithographs Survivor trees.
Research Contribution:The synergy between oriental sacred trees and very old Coolibahs and other Australian native trees that survive in a harsh climate was developed as imagery for Chinese viewing. Mandarin calligraphy contributed to the explication of the Australian flora to Chinese audiences.
Research Significance:This exhibition was installed at the Pickled Art Centre in an artists' residential compound at BeiGao, Beijing. A bilingual catalogue was created in Beijing for the exhibition and for me to provide the context of the work from north and northwest Queensland. The catalogue was also distributed in Shanghai where the work was consolidated in the inaugural Australia China Council artist's residency in Nan Lu, Shanghai.
