Abstract
Snap - an original one-act dark comedy where possession is nine-tenths of the law and that goes for everything and everybody. In Snap, South Park meets Commedia when three characters from the underbelly of society play the card game with photographs from their lives.
Research Statement
| Research Background: | Snap is an original one-act play about a game played out with photos instead of cards. It is a dark comedy where possession is nine-tenths of the law. The play was conceived as one of a group of three, by three Cairns-based playwrights to form the production called “Crackle, Snap, Pop”. The three playwrights all write within a peculiarly Northern Australian genre dubbed “Contemporary Gothic Theatre”, a genre marked by settings that are regional in nature, yet with a dramatization that is both gothic and urban. The subject matter of “Snap” and its German Cabaret style setting are both confronting, a hallmark of Beresford’s writing. |

| Research Contribution: | “Snap” was funded by Arts Queensland, presented by JUTE Theatre Company in Cairns and performed over a two-week season in 2005. The director’s merging of the three discrete plays into a single shaped entity was achieved through some spectacular stage design and through the work of three very good actors. Audiences were affected by the black humour of Snap, many finding the experience quite disturbing. "Snap" was presented at the Scene Changes Conference, Hobart in 2005 and has become a featured inclusion in the Australian Scriptwriter Centre’s 9 series. |
| Research Significance: | Beresford’s writing has benefit for audiences at both the regional and national levels. With settings that are familiar, generally a regional environment, audiences can relate to a play. Concurrently, in presenting confronting materials, the regional audience has opportunity to access contemporary theatre of a style generally only available in a metropolitan context. |
