Abstract

The total solar eclipse of 1868 August 17/18 was observed in both India and Thailand. One Indian expedition was sponsored by the Royal Astronomical Society, and led by Major J.F. Tennant. In this paper we describe the observing team and instruments, discuss their observations, and conclude with some remarks on the place of the 1868 eclipse in solar studies and later nineteenth century European astronomical expeditions to India.
