Abstract

It is the aim of this presentation to identify emerging and required new practices for regional tourism, especially in Northern Queensland. These new ideas stem from a consideration of major trends in world tourism. The logic of this paper will therefore lie in two interconnected parts. First, it is valuable to consider contemporary views of the major trends in world tourism. The trends to be discussed represent the selected ideas of leading organisations and futurists. The second part of the presentation applies these trends and ideas about tourism's future to the specific local tourism contexts including tourist attractions and tour guiding. It is an important feature of this presentation that there is a translation of the big picture trends in tourism to the specific world of tourism practices.
