Abstract

This paper explores the spatial nature of Australia's representation in the Venice Biennale from 1954 - 2003, thereby presenting a view of 'Australian Space from the Outside In'. Examining Australia's representation in Venice, delivers an alternative filter through which we can scrutinise 'Australian Space', from the pastoral Arcadia depicted by Arthur Streeton to Howard Arkley's suburban streetscapes and examples of contemporary indigenous perspectives. Viewing what has been sent to Venice is perhaps an alternative way of noting our perspective of Australian space.
