War is a uniquely human institution, frequently lacking logic but always characterised by paradox. Often, the violence and bloodshed of war is a precondition for peace and harmony, with the ultimate sacrifice of the few required for the comfort and prosperity of the many. During the periods of war, the sanctity of life, enshrined by the national laws and protected by the courts in times of peace, is replaced for a time by the exhortation to kill and maim one's fellow human beings on the battlefield. Yet amidst the terror of the expectant death, individuals engaged in the enterprise of killing often show great compassion to fellow comrades, placing themselves in danger to save, for even a short while, the lives of their fellow combatants. At other times nations once locked in combat become peaceful partners, but may once again become mortal enemies in a future conflict. And out of the brokenness of war there often arises the prosperity of peace. To these many layered paradoxes of war is added the human urge to visit the battlefield: to remember comrades; to rekindle memories of loved ones who fell in battle; to ponder on the feats of those who they will never know; and to gloat on victory or lament over defeat. For whatever reason they come, visiting battlefields has emerged as a growing subsector of the tourism industry.
