Abstract

The Dark Euphoria: Unclassified Media exhibition explores the darker tendencies of the contemporary digital aesthetic and the larger meta-narrative of the mass media network in this period of millennial change. Featuring photography, video remixes of contemporary screen culture, multi-channel video works, image manipulation, glitch art and electronic music the exhibition's didactics were accompanied by a QR Code which linked to this web portal for extra content and work-by-work deconstructions (see: http://darkeuphoria.info).

Research Statement

Research Background The exhibition, Dark Euphoria: Unclassified Media, is the result of several years of research into the digital aesthetics of millennial culture and the techno-futurist century which preceded it. Each art work in the exhibition evokes a particular aspect of this study and was accompanied by a didactic featuring a QR Code which pointed the viewer to an external website of explanatory notes and theory (see: http://darkeuphoria.info)
Research Contribution The exhibition explores the darker tendencies of the contemporary digital aesthetic and the larger meta-narrative of the mass media network in this period of millennial change. It attempts to evoke the theoretical premise of Goodwin's PHD thesis, that contemporary culture is experiencing a period of anxiety and a neo-gothic darkness. It builds on concepts interrogated by Paul Virilio and Slavov Zizek and the writings of science fiction author, Bruce Sterling.
Research Significance Goodwin's photography, video remixes of contemporary screen culture, multi-channel video works, image manipulation, glitch art and electronic music build upon nearly two decades of creative output by the artist who specialises in media manipulation and assemblage. The exhibition was interactive allowing visitors to engage with mobile content by scanning unique QR codes on the didactics of each of the works.
