[Extract] The case of the mountain porters raises many questions about the social sustainability of this type of business. Is it right that porters should have to live this way so that tourists can save a small percentage on their trekking holidays, or so that trekking companies can make a little more profit? Are the companies who continue to treat porters in this way ethical? If we were to travel with them as a paying customer, how can we know that they can be trusted with our health and safety? Are they responsible? The case also tells us that many tourists believe it is not right and that the companies who continue to treat their porters this way are not trustworthy. Increasingly, tourists are selecting trekking businesses that do have programs in place to provide their porters with better working conditions. The challenge continues to be that many tourists do not know the real situation, as the information is hidden from them. ^4 This case highlights the issues of ethics, accountability, rights, justice and responsibility in business. The case also raises concerns about how business decisions are made and how easy it is for other stakeholders to find out about and understand these decision processes. This chapter will examine these areas in more detail, highlighting the issues that businesses need to be aware of, and outlining programs and actions that businesses can adopt to improve their sustainability in these areas.
