Abstract

When poverty is often the main factor leading women, children and/or men to sell their bodies in exchange for money and goods, tourists, with a higher spending power, can be in a position to negotiate risky sexual behaviours, thus contributing to the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STls). In a case study of Cuzco, Peru, Irmgard Bauer researches how tourists and locals perceive each other and the consequences their relationships can have.
