Abstract

In 'Cast Away' (Zemeckis 2000), Chuck is plane-wrecked on an uninhabited island and lives in a cave but, upon rescue, disavows the cave-dweller, saying that a package saved his life. In 'Sanctum' (Grierson 2011), the deep cave system is setting for a sub-marine Oedipal struggle. A place of ancient healing cults, and Plato's metaphor for perception, the cave or grotto persists in postmodern culture (Nelson 2001), not least as performance sites for Pacific masculinities.
