Abstract

Half Full Half Empty (12 – 1pm) is a common expression, used rhetorically to indicate that a particular situation could be a cause for optimism (half full) or pessimism (half empty); or as a general litmus test to simply determine an individual's worldview. The purpose of the question is to demonstrate that the situation may be seen in different ways depending on one's point of view and that there may be opportunity in the situation as well as trouble.

Research Statement

Research Background:Although there are many exceptions the usual combination, which became established around 1800, is flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn. This grouping evolved from the imperial HARMONIEMUSIK as used at the Vienna court of Joseph II from 1782 (two oboes, two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons). The new quintet combination with its solo voices took advantage of the technical improvements being made to wind instruments during this period, and allowed some of the principles of Haydn's writing for string quartet to be transferred to chamber music for wind instruments (Suppan, W. 2001).
Research Contribution:This piece represents an in-depth exploration of this instrumental combination and form. The woodwind section of the orchestra provides a unique sonic contrast to the predominant string and brass sections. The sonic quality of this instrumental combination has a deep connection to the sound pipe organs used in the church.
Research Significance:This composition utilizes a modern harmonic approach with an emphasis on quartal and quintal harmonic structures. There is a deliberate effort to de-emphasise diatonic harmonic conventions. In addition this piece explores the colour of instruments in various pairing combinations such as Flute and French horn.
