Abstract
[Extract] About 80% of all learning occurs through the visual modality. Therefore, teachers must understand the key role that vision plays and know how to help students who experience difficulties learning through the visual modality. If a student you teach has vision impairment, a specialist advisory teacher in vision impairment can provide you with information about the student's vision and learning needs, make specialist resources available to you, and help you develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
About three in 10 school students experience problems with vision, with most easily corrected through prescription glasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery. About 12 in 1,000 students experience low vision; only six in 10,000 are educationally blind.
