[Extract] Risk in a general sense has been identified as a major concern for international travellers (Yavas, 1990; Sonmez and Graefe, 1998a; Reisinger and Mavondo 2005) thus understanding the relationship between risk and travel should be an area for ongoing research. It is surprising therefore that few studies have focused on the risks associated with travel in tropical areas despite the popularity of tropical destinations. The natural environment, often a major drawcard in tropical destinations, is not always as pleasant as that desired by tourists. For example while warm sunny surf beaches are a major attraction the same beaches may be dangerous places for inexperienced swimmers, those who fail to take precautions against sunburn and for swimmers who ignore warnings about marine stingers and sharks. Tropical destinations may also pose other dangers including the weather, tropical diseases and dangerous fauna. Given Reisinger & Mavondo's (2005) observation that perceptions of risk associated with travel determine how safe tourists feel while undertaking a trip it is apparent that risk is an important consideration for destination planners and marketers. For these reasons this paper examines a number of issues associated with risk in tropical destinations.
