Nationally significant leadership barriers in association with individual characteristics affecting career choice in Papua New Guinea (PNG) are investigated. A multinomial logistic regression model using leadership barrier variables of Limited Access to High School (LARS), Lack of People Skills (LOPS), and Lack of Vision (LOV) together with the individual characteristics of age, sex, education and experience are investigated. Each variable, except LOPS, are found to be statistically significant in predicting occupational choice in PNG. Occupational choices by males and females are indifferent once higher education levels have been achieved. This novel application of multinomial logistic regression to model the effect of leadership barriers on occupational choice contributes to the ongoing development of PNG and could be applied in developing economies.
