Abstract
This exhibition has been inspired by the determined self-sufficiency of an Aboriginal woman who roamed King Island during the 1830s and 1840s, avoiding contact with others. References to her stealth survive in the journal of John Scott, a sealer, who called her 'The Ranger'.
Research Statement
| Research Background: | While spending 4 weeks on King Island in 2005-6 some 19th century history of the island was shared with me. A community arts project was developed: Strait on Shore for 10 Days on the Island festival. Following further research and the invitation for a site-specific installation at the South Australian School of Art Gallery, the concept for The Ranger emerged. The Ranger is the name of an otherwise unidentified Tasmanian Aboriginal woman who lived on King Island from c.1830, avoiding contact with others. |

| Research Contribution: | The Ranger project led to ongoing relationships with: UniSA Gallery Director Mary Knights, Project Manager Nici Cumpston, five graduate students from UniSA and TAFE, who all contributed to the successful exhibition and publication. We worked collaboratively locating materials and producing the installation during my brief residency in Adelaide, part-funded by the Helpmann Academy. The project resulted in a publication: The Ranger by UniSA staff and students and an invitational essay from Associate Professor Hoffie, Griffith University. |
| Research Significance: | Developing an installation on-site in an open-to-public gallery setting enabled staff, students and public to interact with art-in-production until the official ‘opening’ in Sept. 2007. Demonstrating and documenting this process was a significant aspect of this project. The first catalogue was produced for a solo exhibition that included essays and images of key works from the previous six years. The project introduced my work to South Australia and led to further first solo exhibitions in Perth and Darwin in 2007-08. |
