Abstract
[Extract] Forcefield 2, 2009 was presented at the 2009 Clemenger Art Award. It is an installation built around a brick fireplace and dead apple tree. The installation is based on research into historic properties in Tasmania and their relationship to the widespread forced removal of Aboriginal people that occurred during the 1800s. The names of the properties are listed on a white picket fence surrounding the 'room' with the fireplace to signify the plight of many Aboriginal children who were brought up as servants.

| Research Background: | Fences represent a division between two spaces. They can symbolise ownership, protection and the delineation of property, but also isolation, oppression and displacement. Forcefield 2 is surrounded by a fence that suggests all of these things. |

| Research Contribution: | This work contributes to ongoing research into historic properties throughout Tasmania in the nineteenth century and their correlation to the widespread forced removal of Aboriginal people that occurred concurrently during this period. |
