Abstract

[Extract] Ron McBurnie has created some quite unforgettable landscapes for his latest exhibition at Gallery@28. Entitled 'A Journey through Summer', the show features paintings and drawings made throughout 2009 and 2010 when McBurnie spent a residency in Alayrac, near Toulouse in southern France and another spent in New Zealand.

Research Statement

Research Background:The continued development of artists’ interpretation of romanticism through landscape in painting and printmaking has played an important role in our understanding and interpretation of nature and our sense of the sublime. This research continues to add to this rich tradition through the artist’s direct response to a variety of chosen landscape sites in a direct en plein air approach to gathering and interpreting visual information.
Research Contribution:This painting addresses the question of the direct interpretation of landscape through the stimulus of direct and concentrated observation in contrast to reliance on digital records as tropes for a secondary source of memory. In doing so it arrives at a specific visual process suitable for gathering, reinterpreting and memorising a variety of landscape environments.
Research Significance:The significance of this research is that it adds to the rich tradition of gathering and distilling information through en plein air painting in comparison to immediate sensory recording of information through digital media. Its value is attested by the following indicators: Journey through Summer exhibition - Gallery @28, Sydney 2010, and the Kedumba Drawing Award 2011, Residencies at in Alayrac, France in 2009 and 2011, and National Art School Sydney 2011.
