Abstract
A composition scored for flute, violin, viola, cello, clarinet, marimba and didgeridoo minimalism concepts. Rescored for string orchestra and woodwinds. Performed at Umbrella Contemporary Art Studio in conjunction with the Australian Festival of Chamber Music (Nemo Music Publishing).
Research Statement
| Research Background: | This is a composition that utilizes minimalist concepts that refer to composers such as Steve Reich, Phillip Glass, John Cage and Harry Partch. In my research I was looking for models to base my instrumentation, rhythmic and melodic approach. Minimalism is the concept of building layers of relatively simple musical phrases in each part to create a more complex whole. In many ways this relates to my ethnomusicology studies of Indonesian gamelan and Talempong music where a similar principle is employed. The range of instrumentation use by these composers is extensive so I concentrated on a mix of instruments that would give unusual color or sonic texture to the piece. This included woodwinds; - flute and clarinet; stings - violin, viola and cello; tuned percussion and didgeridoo. |

| Research Contribution: | This piece is inspired by the natural beauty of Magnetic Island in particular Horseshoe Bay. The percolating rhythmic aspect refers to the bubbling activity that normally transpires at this holiday location with the melodic line giving a broader stroke of horizon and perspective. As a north Queensland composer my goal is to musically portray the local environment in which I live. |
| Research Significance: | In researching this type of ensemble there is no similar configuration that has utilized in a similar compositional form. The incorporation of tuned percussion and didgeridoo makes this piece especially unique along with the addition of the woodwinds and strings. As an addition to the body of minimalist work the compositional focus and instrumentation gives this piece a individual and unique significance. |
