Abstract
A composition scored for chamber ensemble and narrator. Based on the indigenous tale of the brolga bird based on Lydian Chromatic Concepts. Instrumentation: flute, violin, viola, cello, alto saxophone, marimba and didgeridoo. Performed at Umbrella Contemporary Art Studio in conjunction with the Australian Festival of Chamber Music (Nemo Music Publishing).
Research Statement
| Research Background: | This composition came about due to the exhibition Tracks of the Past, Printing the Future' that was presented at Umbrella Studios - Contemporary Art. In discussion with the director she mentioned that there was to be an exhibition in conjunction with the Australia Festival of Chamber Music and forwarded the idea of an original composition based on a local aboriginal myth of the Brolga Bird as reflected in images by one of the artist in the show. |

| Research Contribution: | Suite Brolga is based on the aboriginal myth about the Brolga. This composition features Shirley Collins, a local aboriginal artist whose art works will be on exhibition, narrating the story of the Brolga accompanied by Flute, Alto Sax, Violin, Viola, Cello, Marimba and Didgeridoo with William Barton and Timothy as featured performers in this composition as well. Sections of the composition are based on George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic concepts for the harmonic and melodic content. There are improvised sections integrated into the score, in which some of the instruments interpret characters in the story musically. |
| Research Significance: | The exhibition New works on paper by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island featured artists who live and work in the region. The Brolga bird is a totem of Shirley Collins. The Brolga (Grus rubicunda), formerly known as the "Native Companion", is a bird in the crane family. The Brolga is a common wetland bird species in tropical and eastern Australia, well known for its intricate mating dance. It is the official bird emblem of the state of Queensland. |
