Abstract

A composition scored for concert stage band that begins with a brass choral and fanfare. This piece was composed for the university graduation ceremonies.

Research Statement

Research Background:	This composition resulted from grant proposal from the Australian Festival of Chamber Music and James Cook University in conjunction with the festival and the 40th year celebrations at the University. I was commissioned to compose a series of pieces based on the history of the university. Inclusive in this series was the request for a processional piece to be used at graduation ceremonies.
Research Contribution:	The music group that performs at James Cook University graduation ceremonies is the 1RAR Band based at Lavarack Barracks, Townsville. The score is for a concert stage band including five saxes, four trumpets, four trombones and rhythm section. Researching various processional compositions, especially the Elgar’s 'Pomp and Circumstance' a composition was designed that has a steady walking pulse beginning with a brass choral and fanfare to announce the procession.
Research Significance:	This composition comprises four movements that outline the history of James Cook University and the fifth, processional movement. Movement 1) The Jack and the Queen celebrates Premiere Jack Charles Allan Pizzey who initiated the JCU proposal and Queen Elizabeth II who officiated the opening; Movement 2) The Silver Fox and the Leather Apron is inspired by Sir George Fisher the first Chancellor of JCU; Movement 3) The Sword and the Scale is musical portrayal of Sir George Kneipp second Chancellor of JCU; Movement 4) The Shark and the Sea Turtle is a tribute to Eddie Koiki Mabo the landmark Native Title plaintiff and JCU employee; and Movement 5) The Tropics and the Reef is the James Cook University Processional.
