Abstract

Ten compositions for solo piano aimed at AMEB technical studies at Grades Six – Eighth. The pieces progress through various time signatures to give students experience with odd meters in particular.

Research Statement

Research Background:I researched the Australian Music Education Board syllabus and determined that there was a lack of engaging studies for students that gave them experience in unusual time signatures especially odd time signatures such as 5/8, 7/4, 9/8 or 10/4. In my research it became clear that the compositions should be aimed at AMEB sixth grade or above.
Research Contribution:I have composed for several instrumental configurations but had not really explored the piano as a solo instrument. Initially the pieces were aligned with times of the day such as 'Rise and Shine'. Over the period of composing the ten movements or sketches I began to see a pattern emerge that had more to do with explorations in time signatures or meter. So eventually the sketches became aligned with ten different time signatures. The sketches are in the following time signatures: No. 1 Rise and Shine = 4/4; No. 2 The Long Haul = 2/2; No. 3 Half Full Half Empty = 3/8; No. 4 The Lull After the Storm = 4/4; No. 5 Fits and Starts = 5/8; No. 6 From Here to Eternity = 6/8; No. 7 Another Day Another Dollar = 7/4; No. 8 Hit the Ground Running = 8/4; No. 9 In the Nick of Time = 9/8 and No. 10 Tit For Tat = 10/4.
Research Significance:I found very little literature in the compendium of music that utilized unusual time metres. It is significant that this series of ten sketches contribute to this deficit.
