Abstract
This exhibition consists of thirty-two original artworks—oil paintings and pen and ink drawings that make pictorial reference to early European and English prints that are also displayed in the exhibition.
The artworks are not copies but rather contemporary translations based loosely on the compositions, concepts and key issues underpinning the related prints by the following artists: FE Weirotter (1733–71) William Strang (1859–1921) Charles Cousen (1813–1889) after John Constable (1776–1837) Timothy Cole (1852–1931) after John Constable (1776–1837) Frederic Jacques (1859–1931) Gabriel PERELLE (1603–1677) & Adam PERELLE (1640–1695) Adolphe Potemont Martial (1828–1883) Joan Sadeler the elder (1550–1600) after design by Marten de Vos (1532–1603) Francois Pierdon (1821–1904) Metairie Normande after Constant Troyon Sebastien Le Clerc (1587–1633) Angèle Delasalle (1867–1941) Circle of Herman van Swanevelt (c.1600–1655) Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778) Alfred Brunet Debaines (1845–1939) John Sell Cotman (1782–1842) Louis Marie Lemaire (1824–1910)
By visual juxtaposition of Brown’s artworks with early prints this exhibition (and the accompanying catalogue that explains the relationship between Brown’s artwork and related prints) showcases a contemporary North Queensland artist’s perception of changes of approach, conceptual focus and choice of subject material that separate current practice in the tropical North from the historical precedents in Europe and England.
Research Statement
| Research Background: | This exhibition is an extension of my ongoing interest in examining relationships between current approaches in the Creative Arts (with a focus on North Queensland art practices) and historical precedents (with a focus on early European and English printmakers). I am fascinated how the motivations (e.g. choice of topic, subject and disposition of subject material) and technical processes (e.g. rendering styles, medium and format) are driven by culture, social issues and location (amongst others) and how these forces play significant roles in the creative process. The juxtaposition of my artworks with the prints by early artists highlights this concern with finding congruence and points of separation of artistic approach |

The exhibition catalogue clarifies the the differences separating the practice of a North Queensland artist from those of early European and English printmakers. |
| Research Significance: | This exhibition is one of the first shows of original artworks to draw pictorial and conceptual connections between the working practices of a contemporary North Queensland artist with the pictorial evidence perceived in prints by twenty historically significant printmakers. The exhibition was reviewed by "The Daily Mercury" newspaper (Mackay) on 25th June 2011 on page 35. |
