In a design-based approach to technology education, the focus is on the aesthetic aspects of technology, which represent a departure from the traditional curriculum. The focus on aesthetics is intended to teach students to become critical and discerning participants in the material culture. The intention of this approach to teaching is that objects that are made in the classroom will come to serve both practical and symbolic functions. Consequently, the benefits of this design approach to the teaching of technology include the potential for students to engage in making work that is unique and expressive. Equally important is the opportunity for students to develop self knowledge, and to gain the rewards of communication with others through the products these students contemplate and make.
