Abstract

[Extract] Spiculite is a relatively uncommon inclusion within the framework of coral reefs. It is formed from cemented spicules or sclerites found within the mass of either soft corals, especially Alcyonarians (Konishi, 1982; Alderslade and Fabricius, 2009) or sponges – the sclerosponges – usually at depths below active coral growth (Hartman, 1977; Hooper, 2009).
