Abstract
Hypercalcaemia may be defined as an excessively high concentration of total calcium in blood. It is an important consequence of several companion animal diseases, most notably various forms of cancer. It sometimes alerts the clinician to the presence of a serious underlying disorder, allowing early treatment to begin. On the other hand, hypercalcaemia is itself a pathological state and can cause considerable harm in its own right.
