Abstract
Proteinuria—an abnormally high concentration of protein in urine—is often detected as an incidental finding during routine laboratory screening of pre-operative, geriatric and ill patients. Sometimes an astute clinician will suspect the presence of proteinuria in a particular patient and will test specifically for it. Heavy proteinuria is usually caused by glomerular disease and the vast majority of the protein leaking through damaged glomeruli is albumin.
