Abstract

Regional development has a long history both with practitioners, professionals and researchers and in the referred literature. Most aspects of regional development are well tested in selected industries both in developed and developing countries. However for some individual practitioners regional development is still relatively new.

This paper is for people who are new to regional development or practitioners who need an update on the recent literature.

The choice of the content for this paper was driven by the currency and the relevance of the content for local practice in driving regional development.

The paper has two parts: • First, a summary of the fundamental drivers of regional development as outlined by Coombs (2001). • Second, an outline of some of the recent literature on the drivers of regional development.

The paper closes with some suggestions for some possible next steps that might help you further your practitioner interests.
