[Extract] Evidence-based treatment of head lice infestations needs to take into consideration the parasite's life cycle. Head lice eggs take 7-12 days to hatch, and the period from first instar larva to egg-laying adult is about9-11 days. If a pediculicide does not kill embryos in eggs, treatment needs to be repeated after lice have hatched (i.e., after seven or more days), but before the earliest hatched lice have become mature, mated and started to produce eggs (i.e., about 10 days). Thus, there is a narrow window of treatment opportunity (day 7 to 10) for retreatment, assuming no reinfestation.
