We measured recreational fishers' perceptions of fisheries science in support of increased engagement of recreational fishers in fisheries management. A mail survey of 114 fishers in Queensland, Australia found that fishers considered themselves moderately knowledgeable about fish biology and fisheries management, and perceived a utility in learning about fisheries research. Fishers perceived a link between knowledge level and capacity to engage in fisheries management, and were interested in subjects that benefit their fishing activity and subjects relevant to fisheries management. Science culture was a barrier for fishers when accessing scientific information; however, fishers were interested in learning more about the scientific process to access more information. Fishers' knowledge level, interest in accessing scientific information and perceived link between knowledge and capacity to engage in the management process were positively correlated with centrality of fishing to the fishers' lifestyle. Science communicators will need to assist fishers in negotiating science culture.
