Abstract
[Extract] Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is the direct discharge of groundwater across the sediment–water interface into estuaries, bays, and the ocean. SGD occurs "wherever an aquifer is hydraulically connected with the sea through permeable sediments" (Johannes, 1980). In addition to fresh, terrestrially derived groundwater discharge, SGD also includes the recirculation of seawater through seafloor sediments (Burnett et al., 2006).
