Abstract

Indigenous educators, concerned about schools underestimating the ability of indigenous students, wished to create an instrument that would investigate how well students cope with life out of school, as an alternative indicator of ability. The instrument was developed in the form of a checklist of caregivers' views on coping. Trials in primary and high schools yielded specific suggestions from teachers about how they might use this type of information, and have significant implications for study of assessment in teacher pre-service courses.
