Teacher stress is a universal phenomenon. Current sick leave and attrition rates amongst Australian teachers are a national concern. This is due to the consequential implications, i.e. financial costs; loss of skilled teachers and impact on trends for those pursuing teaching as a vocation.
Teacher stress is cited as being impacted significantly by workload pressures, conflicts with school management bodies and poor staff/student relationships. Stress may manifest in a range of psychological (e.g. anxiety, depression) and psychosomatic symptoms (e.g. headaches, nausea, fatigue). Harmful palliative behavioural practices, such as excessive drinking, smoking, and avoidance behaviour aimed at reducing the stress may have deleterious impacts in terms of personal health and wellbeing. Poor lifestyle choices can result in slow and insidious biochemical cascades that lead to chronic disease. Alternatively simple daily preventative healthcare strategies can have incremental and effective supports at a cellular level that strengthen the body’s immune response and resistance to disease.
The poster under review, The 7 Natural Physicians Daily Balancing Act, illuminates the biopsychosocio elements of health and wellness. The colourful holistic healthcare model provides a universal framework that encapsulates a range of simple, doable, daily lifestyle healthcare practices. It is targeted at a young audience however carries strong, clear messages for adults (teachers). Attitude (making wholesome choices) is foundational to success and a commitment to making small changes is an imperative which may yield powerful, rewarding, immediate, mid and long-term health outcomes.
