Currently, there is controversy regarding the association of abdominal aortic calcific deposits and cardiovascular events. Studies have associated the presence of aortic calcific deposits with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD), congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, ischemic stroke, and cardiovascular disease mortality. However, other studies have not found an association between aortic calcific deposits and cardiovascular events. Methods for calcific deposit quantification vary widely among studies and are usually subjective or semi-quantitative, such as lateral x-ray, and often without any formal assessment of reproducibility.7 We previously developed a reproducible method for quantifying abdominal aortic calcific deposits using computed tomographic angiography (CTA). In this study, we prospectively assessed the association between infrarenal abdominal aortic calcific deposits and subsequent cardiovascular events in patients with PAD.
