Experienced speech pathologists’ views on working on teams

Abstract

International literature have described and researched the benefits of teamwork on productivity. Within healthcare, teamwork specifically has improved patient care while providing positive benefits to the team members. No research has examined if experienced speech pathologists who work on teams, have the same perceptions as other healthcare workers reported in the literature. Five speech pathologists were interviewed concerning their perceptions about working on teams. Results of the interviews are congruent with research about other allied health care team workers. Implications of this research are important for education in speech pathology as few of the speech pathologists had any training about how to work on teams during their university education. However, all believe strongly that such training has a place in university training programs.
